The Museum of Modern Dolls

Welcome to the Museum of Dolls! This project is a hypothetical museum exhibit various dolls in the world. Speaking of dolls, people usually associate with children’s toys. For me, I consider dolls as an art form. They have been created in a wide variety of styles, medium, and may include both pre-manufactured parts or wholly original works. Unfortunately, They often treated like they were just regular plaything that people collect and usually displayed with Teddy bears in most private doll museums. It was a missed opportunity to present what dolls could be.

In this way, my version of the museum is about providing another angel to show what is the possibility of dolls, such as how they perform in films, how they influence fashion, or how they become a collectible in one of a kind art. The ambition of this project is to create a platform that is friendly to the general public, doll collectors and doll artists.

It is the museum for the general public that doesn’t have knowledge about dolls, doll collectors and doll artists. For the general public, it is a fun museum to visit and learn about dolls. For collectors, it is a platform to meet more artists. For artists, it is an opportunity to showcase their artwork.

My experiences in both collecting dolls and being a doll makeup artist inspired me to create this project. The doll community is relatively small compared to other art movements and genres. Moreover, current doll exhibitions, trend shows and museums frame dolls as a child’s toy. I wanted to reshape how dolls are perceived through this project and show that its an elegant form of art that requires solid craftsmanship. In addition, I also wanted to create an opportunity for doll enthusiasts and artists to network and see each other’s works.

For the brand identity of Museum of Modern Dolls, I wanted to express the sophistication and depth in doll art. The primary three colors represent different aspects of body dolls: sculpting, makeup and outfits. The curation of the museum is more towards the production of dolls, their purpose, and their relationship to the artist. The biggest challenge for this project was shedding their old image as a child’s toy and transforming it into one that communicates elegance in a contemporary period.
